In the cannabis space, there is a newcomer that is not so new. It’s called THC-O. Confused? Let us explain. THC-O or THC-O Acetate is a synthetic cannabis compound that was first studied by the US Military in the 1940s.  It occurred on the scene again briefly in the 1970s but then there was a hull. A review of the Google search trends for the term “THC-O” reveals an uptick in consumer interest in this synthetic cannabinoid since the 2010s. THC-O is produced in a specially designed manufacturing unit that contains sophisticated vacuum-bound laboratories where the reaction or the reactive elements are not exposed to humans. THC-O is way stronger than Delta 9 THC or Delta 8 THC.

How is THC-O produced?

THC-O formation involves a number of complex reactions, that range from extractions to substitutions. In the first step, Cannabidiol or CBD is derived from the hemp biomass, keeping the THC extraction rate below 0.3 percent. The extracted CBD is then used to extract Delta 8 THC. But for THC-O extraction, we have to go one step further and involve another chemical in the process which is called Acetic Anhydride. Acetic Anhydride is an odorless, tasteless, extremely inflammable chemical that is used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, explosives, paints, etc. 

This organic solvent, i.e. Acetic Anhydride is added to the extracted Delta 8 THC in order to remove all the terpenes and flavonoids present in the Delta 8 THC molecules. The end result is thick motor oil-like goodness. Sounds a bit improbable but it is really good!

THC-O is extremely potent. Due to a lack of research on it, it is not possible to say with numerical certainty how potent it is as compared to other cannabinoids, but users report that it is at least three times stronger than THC. They also say that it can be compared to a light dose of LSD. The high on THC-O is reported to be more spiritual than other cannabinoids and can lead a user to have deep experiences.
